The last minor round game…

The A’s drove up the road to Stocky knowing that they were 5 wickets away from securing second spot and would have delighted to see another two Light Pass wickets soon after the day’s play had started, leaving the home side in a spot of bother at 7 for 45. Light Pass put up a fight with each of the last 3 partnerships being good ones, with the final wicket falling at 115. Mitch Boschen picked up another wicket to complete another 5 wicket haul, with great support from fellow opener Luke Samain with 4 for 25. Dylan Abinett was the other successful bowler.

Batting practice was the order of the day as Tanunda reached 6 for 132, with Jon Justin making another half century with 71 (hopefully that conversion to 100 comes in the finals), Nathan Justin hitting 27 and Brett Grocke 23. St Hallett’s MVP goes to Mitch Boschen for another match winning effort with the ball.

It’s a replay in the semi final this week with Tanunda again tackling Light Pass, this time for a spot in the biggest game of the year.
The B’s headed to Faith West needing another 30 odd with 7 wickets in hand to chase down Freeling’s total of 104. The task become more of a challenge with 2 players being unable to get to the venue for one reason or another, and five players failing to damage the scoreboard at all. Luckily for all Phil Graetz’s lone hand of 75 was enough to see the side reach 8 for 120 before the skippers shook hands to end the season, with the win taking Tanunda off the bottom of the ladder just in time! Tundarri Sales and Service MVP and Mia Pizza senior player of the week goes to Phil for his lone hand. Oh, and for the record, Stuart Ratsch would like everyone to know that he definitely didn’t hit the ball he was given out on last week. That ends the year for the B’s.

The C’s were on the other side of Faith taking on Sandy Creek at Faith West, with a win needed for top 2 finish. Sandy Creek got off to a flyer and were 50 before long. Good bowling saw the visitors pegged back to 4 for 68, however steady partnerships and an excellent hand from the young Sandy Creek opener saw a total of 172 set. Darryl Hean was again the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets, with Chris Collins, Paul Healy and Jimmy Marshall all taking a wicket. The chase proved to be a challenge throughout, with conditions better for bowling than batting as the day went on, with Tanunda running out of overs at 9 for 152 at the end of the day. Dan Reu was the best with the bat with a solid “but rusty” 67, Mark Hoklas added 29, Clint Hean a fighting 17 and Craig Smith 16. The loss loses the top two finish, but has made little difference to the Semi Final this week with a replay of last year’s Grand Final, with third placed Tanunda taking on second placed Lyndoch. Barossa Valley Brewing MVP goes to Danny Reu for his efforts with the bat.

The D’s drove to Eudunda to take on Eudunda / Robertstown with a top 2 spot also up for grabs. At 2 for 57 it looked like Tanunda would be setting a strengthened Eudunda with a reasonable target. However it wasn’t to be with regular wickets and falling to see Tanunda all out for 105 with a few overs left in the bank. Clint Hart was best with the bat with 43, well supported by Mark Hartigan with 37. Lean pickings for the remainder of the scorecard with the next highest score being only 5! Good tight bowling early by Dan Eggleton had the home side in trouble at 3 for 15. Mark Hartigan rounded out an excellent all round game with 2 wickets that saw Eudunda 5 for 67, but that was as close as Tanunda would get to a win, with the Eudunda / Robertstown hitting the winning runs with 5 wickets in the bank. Special mentions to Louie “Hamstrings” Neldner who may have finished his season a couple of weeks early, and for the barefooted Anthony Roestenburg for sacrificing his support of the Cooper family to help out in the field after Louie limped off. The loss sees the D’s end the regular season in 4th spot, with the Semi Final opponent being the reigning premier Morgan. Tanunda Clubhouse MVP goes to Mark Hartigan for his efforts with both bat and ball.

The Under 16’s enjoyed their week off having won last week and securing 4th spot, resting up for their Semi Final against Gawler Centrals.

Both Under 14 sides ended their seasons on a high with both sides having a win. Tanunda Black headed to Riverton looking to chase down finals bound Gilbert Valley’s 135. An excellent 60 not out from Jonah Whitelum and solid 30 from Hugh Smart were the foundations of Tanunda Blacks total of 144. An excellent way to end the year – well done.

Tanunda Whites took to Faith East with a massive challenge in front of them, with Sandy Creek Gold posting 4 for 196 last week. A wonderful chase followed, with Tanunda passing the score only 2 wickets down. A few late wickets resulting in Tanunda Black ending at 6 for 210 at the end of their allotted overs. It was a great day for the Birchard boys, with Jayden top scoring with 52 and Dylan next best with 43. Nicholas Mills and Riley Westbrook also starred at the top of the order with 36 and 22 respectively. A terrific end to the season.

The Under 12’s finished off with a great game Saturday with special mentions go to Jordan Rosenzweig for a good all round game, excellent batting from Harry Leinert and a ripper catch for Harmon Vears. A great bowling effort from all bowlers, showing their continued improvement. A highlight was the sight of all the boys using correct bowling techniques, resulting in the ball to carrying through to the wicket keeper on a regular basis. Congratulations to all the Under 12 boys for a great season, even if it was a bit shorter than you had all hoped due to the weather (and a special thanks from the coaches to Karen for her organisation throughout the year and the parents for helping through the year).

The Under 10’s played Sandy Creek in their final game of the year, with the visitors winning the toss and having wanting Tanunda to have a bat first. All players showed just how much they have improved over the season, with excellent partnerships throughout, patient batting and excellent running between wickets. Ben Swan hit an excellent 4, and Walter Holmes hit a classic cover drive well beyond his years. Much like the batting, Tanunda’s bowling and fielding was excellent, with the wides tally ½ of what it was in the first game of the year. Ben Mernagh, Hudson Lindner and James Duff each took wickets, super-sub Sam Roestenburg took an excellent catch in the covers, and Patrick Brooks, Chloe Rosenzweig and Walter Holmes all playing key roles in run outs. As a sign of appreciation the players presented coaches Stuart Swan and Pete Mernagh with gifts in the form of water balloons, taking the time to place them with reasonable force to all parts of both coach’s bodies. Revenge will be sweet – sleep with your lights on kids!

The run home…

With finals a couple of weeks away with the results key to a few of the sides chances of making finals, and the results couldn’t have gone better for the black and whites.

The A’s drove up to Stockwell to take on Light Pass in a game that will determine who will secure the all important top two position on the ladder.  The home side won the toss and sent Tanunda in for a hit and would have been quietly happy with their working having bowled Tanunda out for 144.  Skipper Pete Mernagh led with way with an excellent 40, with Jimmy Marshall and Luke Samain making 22.  Brett Grocke contributed a patient and important hand with 18 not out.  Knowing it was going to take an excellent bowling performance to take the points, Tanunda made an excellent start with the ball having Light Pass’s top five batsmen all in the shed by the time the score reached 19.  Mitchell Boschen was the star with the ball taking 4 wickets, with fellow opener Luke Samain taking the other scalp.  Tanunda Clubhouse player of the week goes to Mitch Boschen for his fine spell of left arm pace bowling.  Good luck this week taking the remaining 5 wickets.

The B’s took on Freeling at Faith East in what will be the last game of the year for both sides.  Skipper Toby Mifflin won the toss and decided that having a bowl was the order of the day, which turned out to be a great call thanks to an excellent team bowling performance which saw the last Freeling batsman call an early close to their innings at 9 for 104.  Sam Dunn and Oscar Harms showed that the future is bright in the bowling stocks, picking up 3 wickets and 2 wickets respectively, with Aiden Radzevicius, Charles Shaw, Steve Lewis and Stuart Ratsch each taking a wicket.  The run chase could not have started any worse than it did, with the first three batsmen out without contributing to the score.  This brought together Phil Graetz and young Oscar Harms, who went on to bat out the day to put victory within reach, at 3 for 73, with Phil  reaching his half century, undefeated on 58, with Oscar contributing a valuable 13 not out.  Barossa Valley Brewing player of the week goes to Phil Graetz, although Oscar’s all-round performance is worth a note for someone who also represents the club at Under 14 level each week.

The C’s headed to Gawler High School to take on South Gawler in a must win game fielding a side with the perfect blend of experience and youth.  Tanunda fielded first and an excellent team bowling performance restricted the home side to 112, bowling South out with a couple overs to spare.  Star with the ball was Darryl Hean, picking up 5 wickets with Sam Cox and Kyle Graetz both picked up 2 wickets with Bailey Smith taking the remaining scalp.  A few easy chances went down, but skipper Mark Hoklas showed all how it was done taking 4 catches.  Despite the loss of regular wickets the win was secured with 11 overs to spare, with Craig Smith being the best with the bat with 24.  Mark Hoklas backed up his fielding with a hard hitting 21 with Sam Cox and Stuart Swan both contributing 18.  Tundarri Sales and Service player of the week goes to the regular award winner, Darryl Hean.

The D’s hosted Light Pass at Faith West in a game that would secure a finals berth for one of the sides with Light Pass batting first and compiling a steady 5 for 123.  Skipper Dan Eggleton was the best with the ball with 2 wickets, supported by a wicket each to Anthony Roestenburg, Kym Underwood and Kieren Smith.  Special mention to Justin Thompson for a great display with the gloves (despite Tim Brooks trying to sabotage Justin’s game on Friday night) which included a “just like the Gary Vogt photo at the Greenock Creek Tavern” catch  which still has first slip George Akkerman smiling. Another slightly tricky chase on a must win game that took 36.4 overs to complete, with Jamie Roehr deciding that someone else should hit the winning runs leaving the field for a well made 24 with the scores level.  George Akkerman made a welcome return after a long injury layoff with 37, with the best with the bat being Kieren Smith with 40 not out.  Kieren Smith picks up the Rogash Windows player of the week along with the Mia Pizza senior player of the week awards.  Finals are now something the D’s can look forward to – well done all. Rumours of a road trip to Eudunda this week, so publicans  between Tanunda and Eudunda will need to stock up just in case.

Much like the C’s and D’s, the Under 16s headed to Kapunda to tackle Kapunda / Eudunda in a must win game.  An outstanding bowling performance by the Tanunda lads saw the home side restricted to just 44 in the 17th over.  Kyle Graetz was the star with the ball taking 4 for just 13, Ben Biagi took 2 wickets, with Lachlan Miller and Jackson Gray both taking a wicket.  Nic Burton contributed the other wicket with a run out.  Tanunda easily secured victory and an unexpected week off reaching 6 for 90 at stumps.  James Madden finished an excellent minor round contribution with bat, reaching 400 for the season (at an average of 50) whilst top scoring for 38.  Brodie Robinson was the other batsman to make a score of note with 18.  Well done on reaching the finals, now to bring home the points when it matters the most!

In the Under 14s, Tanunda White hosted Sandy Creek Gold at Faith East with finals not a possibility.  The visitors had an excellent day with the bat, reaching 4 for 196 at the end of the 40 overs.  Dylan Birchard, Angus Blieschke and Bryan Stevenson-White each taking a wicket.  Good luck with the chase next week.

The Tanunda Black Under 14 team took the trip to Riverton to tackle Gilbert Valley.  The home side batted first and amassed 6 for 135 off of the allotted overs.  Lachlan Munzberg was the standout with the ball taking 3 wickets, Oscar Harms took 2 wickets and Hugh Smart the other wicket to fall.  Good luck with a patient chase this week to close out your year.

The Under 12’s were back at Faith for our last home game of the year, with Angus Dohse and Hayden Spehr the joint captains for the day. The boys won the toss and decided to give Sandy Creek Gold the chance to bowl first. Opening bats Hugo Schild and Jack Collins started well with a 22 run opening stand from the Justin Langer lookalikes. Jordan Rosenzweig and Hayden Spehr complemented the start with a further 40 run partnership. Other good batting performances came from Jack Underwood and Chloe Rosenzweig, Chloe hit her second four in consecutive weeks, well done and thanks for filling in. Our bowlers started well keeping the run rate down, Harmon Vears, Jack Collins, Sydney Pick, Liam Cook, Hugo Schild and Chloe Rosenzweig each took a wicket. Some excellent work in the field with captain Angus Dohse amd Coan Linke showing the way and Harry Lienert taking a great catch. One game to go!

The Under 10’s got to experience playing on turf at Tanunda, with many of the players having their first experience of “real cricket”.  Skipper Jason Tapscott decided that losing the toss and letting the opposition decide who was doing what was the way to go, with Tanunda sent out to bowl first against Lyndoch.  Sam Roestenburg instantly found out he could cut a ball 6 inches on turf which tested out keeper Nick Holme’s reaction time.  Darcy Thompson was the best of the bowlers taking a wicket, with Ben Swan having a good day in the field with a stumping and a run out.  Skipper Jason Tapscott also contributed an excellent run out, but really didn’t know what all the fuss was about, calming turning to return to his spot in the field whilst the remainder of his team celebrated what he’d just achieved without him.

Lyndoch showed how to bowl on turf, keeping the ball on the stumps, resulting in Tanunda losing quite a few more wickets than in recent times, with most being bowled with the ball passing under the batters bats.  No real highlights with the top score being well and truly the wides column.

Good luck to the A’s, C’s and D’s this week closing out their finals spots.  Well done to the Under 16s for securing yours, and to all other players, enjoy your last week of cricket before the focus quickly turns to Football and Hockey.

Back from the break…

Close results were the order of the day on Saturday, with thrillers played out on ‘both sides of the ditch’, and a couple of them coming pretty close to home!

The A’s made a welcome return to the Tanunda turf after a long absence due to pitch repairs and a long run of hot weather on Saturdays. Opposition skipper from Greenock decided the best thing to do was to have a bowl to see how it would play. It proved to be a pretty wise piece of captaincy with the Magpies in all sorts, with only Jon Justin and Nathan Justin making double figures in the top 8, with one of the opposition bowlers having a terrific day out with figures of 7 for 7! Some rear guard action by Connor Peacock and Dylan Abinett saw the home side limp to being all out for 103 in the 31st over, with Dylan Abinett making Glen McGrath proud, top scoring with 23.

Much like what was happening at Eden Park, the chase came down with the wire with the opposition 8 for 97 with overs to spare. But the old wise skipper, Pete ‘Pistol’ Mernagh bowled the 3 balls he’ll hear about for a long time no doubt, dismissing the last 2 batmen to see Tanunda sneak over the line by 6 runs. In a pretty good team bowling performance Mitch Boschen, Shaun Akkerman and Dylan Abinett each took too wickets, with Luke Samain and Connor Peacock taking a wicket. Barossa Valley Brewing A grade player of the week goes to Dylan for his efforts with both bat and ball.

The B’s headed to South Gawler with only pride to play for over the remaining rounds. Skipper Toby Mifflin won the toss and elected to have a hit, and after a promising opening partnership regular wickets saw Tanunda in all sorts of trouble at 8 for 59 before a good partnership between Aiden Radzevicius and Paul Healy saw the a score of 119 being set. Coming in at number 10, Aiden was by far the best of the batsmen being the last one out for 35.

An early wicket gave the boys hope, however that was the only wicket to fall as South proved far too good, cruising to victory in the 33rd over. Aiden was the successful bowler, and easily takes the Tanunda Clubhouse B grade player of the week.

The C’s had the bye to cap off 4 weeks without cricket!

The D’s hosted top team Morgan at Faith East, with the opposition winning the toss and having a hit, posting a reasonable score of 145 (thanks somewhat to a generous dropped catch that may have cost some 75 runs of that total) before being bowled out in just the 25th over. There was a real footy club theme amongst the wicket takers, with Chris Collins (on a hat-trick at one point in time), Dan Eggleton and Nat Geue each taking 3 wickets apiece, with ‘absent out’ being the other wicket to fall. The chase looked to be going well at 2 for 66, with Sam Cox enjoying his chance to play as number 3 hitting 28. From there wickets tumbled in a hurry, with Tanunda behind the 8 ball at 8 for 88. What was to happen next was quite remarkable, with Jamie Roehr and young Cooper Ratsch putting on a ripper unbeaten partnership to steal the win with a ball to spare! Rogash Windows C grade player, and Mia Pizza senior player of the week goes to Jamie for his match winning knock of 41, with Cooper outshining his dad to end on 18. The second thriller to play out in Tanunda on an otherwise quiet and normal Saturday afternoon!

The Under 16s took on South Gawler on the turf at Tanunda and would have known they had a game on their hands after the visitors posted a highly competitive 6 for 142, at one stage they were 3 for 139. Best with the ball was Jake Hartigan with 3 wickets, with Ben Biagi and Lachlan Miller both picking up a wicket. An excellent team batting effort led to Tanunda eclipsing the visitors total reaching an excellent 3 for 173 off the 25 overs. James Madden was the standout retiring on 54, Jonah Whitelum retiring on 20 and Ben Biagi ending on 21 not out. Jake Hartigan capped off an excellent all-round day with 18.

It was an all Tanunda affair in the Under 14s at Faith East, with Tanunda White winning the toss and batting. After 25 overs a victory target of 77 was set, with Jayden Birchard, Riley Westbrook and Nic Mills all posting double figures. Best of the Tanunda Black bowlers was Aaron Birt and Luca Whitelum both taking two wickets well supported by Blake Dahlitz, Oscar Harms, Will Parker and Jacob Judd with a wicket each. The Tanunda Blacks headed out to the middle to chase down the victory target but it wasn’t to be, with the Tanunda White bowlers having a field day and winning the bragging rights by restricting Tanunda Black to 37. Angus Blieschke led the team bowling performance with 2 wickets, with Jackson Docherty, Dylan Birchard, Nichola Mills, Tyson Healy, Tomas Huezenroeder and Riley Westbrook each getting a wicket.

After weeks of rest the under 12 boys were another group of Tanunda cricketers that were well and truly ready for their first game of cricket in a month. Nuriootpa won the toss and chose to bat. Good bowling performances from captain Harry Lienert and Angus Dohse help slow the runs late in Nuriootpa’s innings. Excellent fielding by Malakai GaskinVanWieringen and exemplary glove work from Liam Cook proved great support to the bowlers. With a few of the regular ‘up the order’ bats not available a few lads were sent up the order. Jack Underwood batted well making 14, Hayden Spehr with 15 supported by Sydney Pick a well compiled 10. Well done lads!

The Under 10’s headed to take on Kapunda on the “perfectly sized for Under 10 cricket” Kapunda Primary School oval. Great sportsmanship was shown by James Duff and Nick Holmes with both young lads putting up their hand to play for the opposition to ensure it was an even game, well done boys. Tanunda batted really well with Kapunda only managing to take 3 wickets, the highlight of the innings being Chloe Rosenzweig hitting her first 4. Another good bowling performance from all, with Zavier Dswonitzky taking a good caught and bowled, Walter Holmes and Ben Mernagh both bowling one of the opposition players and Chloe backing up her batting with a good caught behind.

A couple of weeks before finals, and at this stage there are a number of sides in finals contention. Every win from here on is critical – so good luck to all sides this week.

A new year…

A short chatter to kick off 2015 with both the A’s and the B’s having a bye, and a number of our youngest stars yet to kick off their 2015 campaigns after the Christmas Break.

The C’s took on Angaston at Faith West and started the second half of the season with a strong win. Angaston won the toss and had a bat and managed 8 for 114 off their allotted 40 overs. Young Bailey Smith and Steve Lewis were best with the ball, with 2 wickets each, well supported by Sam Cox, Darryl Hean, Andy Edwards and Charles Shaw who each took a wicket.
A strong chase followed with victory coming in the 21st over. One again our veteran Darryl Hean top scored with 47 at the top of the order, with Tim Brooks playing a fine hand to see the boys over the line ending on 41 not out, with skipper Mark Hoklas also contributing 14 not out at the end. Mia Pizza player of the week goes to Darryl Hean who’s starting to rack up another season full of MVPs!

The D’s hosted Greenock at Faith East and batted first, finding themselves in all sorts of trouble at 3 for 1. The middle order all made contributions, with Clint Hart, Luke Wells, Stuart Ratsch all making double figures. Wayne Bishop showed the new helmet Santa delivered a few weeks ago made all the difference with Wayne making his highest score for the club with 27, with the last wicket falling with the score on 91.
The visitors chased down the total, but had to work for it, taking 28 overs for the win. Stuart Ratsch continues to enjoy his long overdue return to cricket with 2 for 13 off his 8 overs, which included 6 wides, with skipper Bob Smart and Mitch Fox both taking a wicket. Barossa Valley Brewing player of the week goes to Wayne Bishop for making 1/3 of the sides score.

The Under 16’s headed to the dog track to tackle Gawler Centrals, with the hosts making a very strong 2 for 162 off of their 25 overs. Bailey Smith and Lachlan Miller were the successful bowlers with a wicket each. In reply Tanunda managed a very respectable 3 for 127 off of our 25 overs, with James Madden continuing his excellent year, making his average with 58 not out. Nic Burton played a skippers hand with 42.

The Under 14 Whites played Gilbert Valley at Faith East. Gilbert Valley won the toss and had a hit, making 6 for 135 off of their 25 overs. Dylan Birchard was the best of the bowlers with 2 wickets. Angus Schild, Angus Blieschke and Tomas Heuzenroeder each contributed a wicket. Unfortunately we could only manage 41 in reply with most bats getting off the mark but not able to make any scores of note.

The Under 14 Blacks had a more successful day out with a strong win over Greenock at Faith West. The visitors sent Tanunda in with Tanunda making the most of the chance to set the score to beat, making a very strong 3 for 149 off of the allotted 25 hours. Luca Whitelum top scored with 44 not out, well supported by Aaron Bert with 37. In reply Greenock made 5 for 92, with Harry Collins the star with the ball with 2 wickets. Oscar Harms, Charlie Collins and Jacob Judd also contributed a wicket in the strong win.

We wish you a Merry Christmas…

The A’s took on recently relegated Light Pass on the Dubai like conditions at TCG and had an excellent win by 50 runs.  Batting first Tanunda compiled a very competitive 9 for 175 off the 40 overs with Nathan Justin top scoring with 40 well supported by skipper Pete Mernagh with 36 and 25 by Luke Samain.  In reply Light Pass were looking good at 1 for 90 odd before destroyer Dylan Abinett was introduced to the attack, taking full control of the spin friendly conditions, ending with the terrific figures of 5 for 18.  Pete capped off a great all-round day with 3 for 34, with Mitch Boschen and Luke Samain each taking a scalp.  Barossa Valley Brewing MVP goes to Pete Mernagh for an excellent contribution.

The B’s travelled to Freeling and won the toss and had a hit.  Unfortunately regular wickets fell with the boys leaving over 5 overs in the bank being bowled out for 151.  Kym Farley made a solid 30, with Toby Mifflin, Connor Peacock and Phil Graetz each passing 20. It was game on with Freeling 6 for 100 in reply, but the home side passed our score without the loss of another wicket.  Connor Peacock followed his contribution with the ball with 3 wickets, Charles Shaw took 2 with Blake Lockett being the other bowler to take a wicket.  Tanunda Clubhouse MVP goes to Connor Peacock.

The C’s headed to Williamstown to take on fellow finals contender Sandy Creek.  After a “sprinkler” delay Tanunda were sent in for a hit.  With a number of the regular starters unavailable, skipper Mark Hoklas reinvented the batting line up with good result.  Craig Smith opened and made a fine 27, Darryl Hean another contribution with the willow with 25, Sam Cox enjoying batting 3 making 24, with Mark Hoklas and Clint Hart both making mid double figures in a “lower than par” score of 7 for 143.  In reply Sandy Creek appeared to be cruising at 2 for 72 before a ripper of a finish.  Kyle Graetz turned the game with an exceptional spell at the death, bowling well beyond his years, taking 3 for 9 off 6 excellent overs (adding to his two catches).  With 1 ball remaining scores were tied, but after 25 runs, 3 catches, including 2 blinders at first slip, Craig Smith decided that, cometh the man, cometh the moment.  Kyle again found the outside edge from the opposition batsman, with the ball flying to first slip along the ground, with Craig not only stopping the ball but throwing down the stumps to find the opposition batsman short of his ground by a metre to cap off an excellent fighting effort by the boys, with the points shared.  Barossa Valley Toyota MVP goes to Craig Smith for a ripper of an effort, with a special mention to Kyle for getting the side back into the game.

The D’s took on Truro at Truro, with skipper Bob Smart winning to toss and having a hit.  It proved to be a good decision with Tanunda amassing 5 for 241 off our allotted overs.  Bob led by example with a well made 60, enjoying his first father son 100 run partnership with Hugh who made 45 – now that’s what it’s all about right there!  Justin Thompson continued to enjoy his return to cricket with 35, with Dan Eggleton making a hard hitting 49 not out to close out the innings.  In reply Truro posted a valiant 9 for 210, with Bob Smart continuing his excellent day with 3 wickets, Louie Neldner and Dan Eggleton both took two wickets, with Troy Pudney and James McMahon both taking a scalp.  An excellent win.  Rogash Windows MVP goes to Bob Smart for a fine contribution with both bat and ball.

The Under 16s took on Kapunda / Eudunda / Robertstown on the dusty TCG and game home with the points in a blinder of a game.  The visitors batted first and made a very competitive 5 for 129 off their 25 overs.  Bailey Smith and Nic Burton were best with the ball with 2 wickets each, with Eddy Laucke taking the remaining scalp.  James Madden continued his fine recent for with 57 at the top of the order, with Nic Burton being the only other batsman to get double figures with 22.  All looked down and out before Eddy Laucke and Lachlan Miller made a remarkable 18 off the last over to get the points in an absolute thriller!  Must have been the weekend for it…

The Tanunda White under 14 side hosted Angaston at Faith East and couldn’t quite come away with the win. Angaston batted first making 6 for 80 off 25 overs, with Nicholas Mills the best of the bowlers with 2 wickets. Tomas Heuzenroeder, Angus Blieschke, Jack Collins and Will Meyer each took a wicket.  In reply Tanunda could only manage 7 for 66, with Riley Westbrook top scoring with 19, Nicholas Mills capping off a great game with 16 and Will Meyer 11.

The Under 14 Black’s headed to the pickets at Sandy Creek and also fell just short.  The home side batted first and made 5 for 118, with Oscar Harms, Harry Collins, Lachlan Munzberg, Jaden Graetz and Charlie Collins each taking a wicket.  Tanunda put on a terrific chase, ending the day at 3 for 104.  Hugh Smart got the other half of his 98 runs for the day with got the other half of his 98 runs for the day with 53 not out (retired), Blake Dahlitz made 16 not out with Oscar Harms also retiring on 14.

The Under 12’s also enjoyed a great game of cricket to finish the year. Samuel Tapscott was captain for the day, winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Jordan Rosenzweig and Coan Linke opened the batting making a solid28 run partnership. Running between wickets was a highlight of our batting, Sydney Pick, Haydon Spehr and Hugo Schild making valuable runs highlighted by excellent running between the wickets.   Tanunda’s bowling and fielding was of high quality, with wicket going to Jordan Rosenzweig, Sydney Pick and Hugo Schild.  Excellent catches from Harmon Vears, Liam Cook, Hugo Schild & Jordan Rosenzweig. Good line and Length bowling performances from Harry Lienert and Angus Dohse kept the run rate down through the middle of the innings. Our excellent fielding resulted in 2 great run outs. A huge thanks to Chloe Rosenzweig for filling in and showing the spectators great technique with the bat.

The Under 10’s headed to Nuri on a lovely Friday evening to cap off the “2014” part of the season against the traditional rivals. Skipper Hudson Lindner won the toss and had no hesitation in batting.  Another good display of patient batting followed, with the star with the bat being Darcy Thompson with 2 excellent fours. Mitch Radzevicius, Sam Rostenberg and James Duff also hit fours.  After setting a competitive total the team bowled and fielded really well, with Ben Swan starring with the bowl balling two opposition bats in the one over.  He was well supported by Mitch Radzevicius and James Duff who both took wickets, with special mention to Ben Mernagh for his excellent caught behind.

On behalf of the TCC we wish everyone a safe, family filled Christmas and start to 2014.  Hope Santa is kind, and we’ll see you in 2015!

Here comes Santa Clause…

After celebrating the arrival of Santa on Friday night (well done to all involved in pulling together this terrific event), the A’s headed to Greenock to take on the Schlungers, and for the second week in a row easily took the points. Batting first Tanunda compiled a competitive 8 for 243 from our allotted 40 overs. Jon Justin was the best of the bats hitting another half century, finishing on 62, well supported by skipper Pete Mernagh with 33, Liam Boschen in his return game to the A’s with 33 not out, Nathan Justin 31 and Lachy Scott-Hoy with 21.

The home side were never really in the chase, eventually bowled out for 91 in the 28th over. Best of the bowlers was the skipper with a terrific 3 for 6 off 4.4 overs. Mitch Boschen also picked up 3 scalps, with Luke Samain and Dylan Abinett picking up 2 wickets a piece. Tundarri Service and Sales MVP goes to Pete Mernagh for a terrific all round game.

The B’s took on South Gawler on a dusty and dry TCG pitch. South batted first and were bowled out for 152 with 4 overs to spare (with 27 of those coming from wides and no-balls). Best with the ball was young Fraser Cameron with 4 for 20, with Aden Radzevicius and Connor Peacock both taking 2 wickets. Steve Lewis and Charles Shaw both picked up a scalp.
The extras would prove costly in the end with Tanunda running out of overs, finishing at 8 for 140 off the forty overs. After an early let off skipper Toby Mifflin led the way with 53, with Darren ‘Pres’ Graetz turning back the clock to be the only other batsman to make a score of note with 44 not out. The Clubhouse MVP goes to Fraser Cameron for an excellent return with the ball.

The C’s also took on South Gawler, this time at Faith East. Winning the toss and batting proved to be the right call by skipper Mark Hoklas, with Tanunda putting on 7 for 189, with 3 of those wickets falling in the last over. Darryl ‘Veteran’ Hean continued to dominate the A4 competition with an excellent 75, well supported by ‘half centurion’ Sam Brooks raising his bat on his way to 43. Apologies from the scorers for that one Sam!

In reply South were in real trouble at 6 for 58 odd before a hard hitting 80 run partnership made the game interesting. Darryl Hean continued an outstanding day with 3 for 6 off his 8 overs, young Bailey Smith took the key wicket on his way to 2 for 7, with Paul Healy, Sam ‘Variety Bucket’ Brooks, Nat Magoo, Stuart Swan and Dan Reu all taking a wicket, with some of those coming cheaper than others. There was some excellent fielding efforts, especially from ‘cover magnets’ Bailey Smith and Tim ‘Sub’ Brooks fielding more balls that the rest of the team combined. A few ripper catches, with Craig Smith and Dan Reu taking blinders, only to be outdone by Paul Healy with one of the best gully catches you will ever see. Barossa Valley Brewing MVP easy – Darryl Hean.

The D’s finally had the numbers for an away game and headed to Eudunda for a rare game on the turf, and couldn’t quite come home with the points. Eudunda-Robertstown batted first were bowled out for 155 with a couple of overs to go. Kym Underwood enjoyed the trip back to the old traps with an exceptional effort of 6 overs, 4 maidens, 6 for 2, including 4 wickets off his last 7 balls, remarkable. Tom Eggleton enjoyed the new ball with 2 wickets, with Chris Collins and Bob Smart both taking up a wicket.

Regular wickets hampered the run chase, with Tanunda falling short on 97. Skipper Bob Smart led from the front with 24, Clint Hart with 19 and Louie Neldner with 16. Rogash Windows MVP and Mia Pizza player of the week goes to Kym ‘the wrecker’ Underwood.

The Under 16’s headed to South Gawler looking to defend their total of 6 for 151 on the fast South oval. They managed to do that comfortably, with South being bowled out for 127 in the 37th over. James Madden was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets, with Ben Biagi and Jonah Whitelum both taking 2 wickets. Jackson Gray and Copper Ratsch both took a wicket each in the win.

The Under 14 Whites also ventured to Eudunda, looking to defend their 5 for 139 against a combined Eudunda/Robertstown – Kapunda side. The game came down to the wire with the home side taking the points in the last over. It was a Birchard kind of day in the field with Jayden and Dylan Birchard taking 2 wickets each with Angus Blieschke also taking a wicket. Jayden also being involved in running out one of the opposition bats.

The Under 14 Blacks headed to the challenging TCG looking to chase down Sandy Creek’s score of 95. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be with the home side bundled out for 73. Skipper Hugh Smart was the star with 20, with no one else able to crack the double figure mark.

On a drizzly Saturday morning Tanunda Under 12’s played Gilbert Valley Maroon at Faith East. Tanunda won the toss and Jack Underwood captain for the day decided to bat first. A solid start with Coan Linke continuing his good form with the willow making 11 runs, complimented by Jordan Rosenzweig who made a well compiled 26. A feature of our innings was the running between wickets, good to see the practise is working. Good bowling by Sydney Pick, Harmon Vears, Coan Linke and Liam Cook who all took a wicket. Some great fielding resulted in 2 run outs, one run out came from the super arm of Samuel Tapscott. Well played boys, see you at training for some more fielding practise.

Across the other side of Faith the Under 10’s were taking on them Panther’s from up the hill. Angaston won the toss and had a bowl. A solid batting performance from many of the players, with Mitch Radzevicius, Darcy Thompson, Sam Rostenberg, Harry Robinson and Jason Tapscott all hitting 4’s.

Nick Holmes got the crowd excited with 2 wickets in 2 balls, with Chloe Rosenzweig and Jason Tapscott both taking a wicket in a generally ‘slightly tired after Santa’s arrival’ bowling effort across the team, but the fielding was exceptional with a great direct hit on a tough angle by Darcy Thompson, with Harry Robinson also getting a direct hit. Award winners this week were Nick Holmes, Jason Tapscott, Ben Swan and Patrick Brooks.

The association has a bye this week for the test match, so a week off for the scribe. Good luck with the Christmas shopping over the next couple of weeks.

In memory of Phillip Hughes…

After one of the saddest weeks in cricket history, the mood was very sombre as members of the TCC headed to the field on Saturday to pay their respects to Phil Hughes, and to enjoy the game of cricket the way that Phil did throughout his life. Our sympathy and thoughts are with Phil’s family, his friends, and those near and dear to him in cricketing circles. A talented lad taken far too soon.

The A’s headed to Eudunda on both Saturday and Sunday and had a terrific win. Skipper Pete Mernagh won the toss and had no hesitation on batting on a good batting deck, a decision that was proven to be the right one with Tanunda declaring with 5 overs left in day 1 on 9 for 305. Lachy Scott-Hoy was the best with the bat with 89, Alex Petty showed again that he’s a great additional to the club with 64, and Jon Justin making another 50, hitting 56. Brett Grocke, Wayne Akkerman and Luke Samain all chipped in with 20’s.

Our bowling was excellent with the home side only managing 158 in reply. Luke Samain was the star bowling 4 of the opposition bats. Dylan Abinett took two wickets, with Alex Petty (two) and Blake Lockett both picking up their first wickets for the club and Mitchell Boschen also picking up a scalp. Pete decided to have another trundle with Eudunda / Robertstown having a better time with the willow second time around, ending the day on 4 for 144. Dylan Abinett took another two wickets, with Mitchell Boschen and Luke Samain both taking wickets. Catches win matches as they say, luckily they didn’t cost this one with 6 or so catches put down over the day… a great team effort.

Rogash Windows player of the week goes to Luke Samain for his effort with the ball, with Lachy unlucky to miss out.

The A2's observing a minutes silence in honour of Phillip Hughes before the game

The A2’s observing a minutes silence in honour of Phillip Hughes before the game

The B’s took to the “turf” at the TCG and didn’t quite have the day they would have hoped, with the visitors, Sandy Creek taking the points. Sandy Creek won the toss and sent us in on a dry deck that is struggling to find the green element (not for a lack of trying by the hard working curator!). A competitive score of 161 was compiled with skipper Toby Mifflin being the only one to enjoy the conditions making 66, Liam Boschen making 20, and Jon Farley 14. The visitors chased down the total in 30 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets. Hugh Rogan, Connor Peacock and Shaun Akkerman each picked up a wicket. Mia Pizza player of the week is easy this week, with Toby Mifflin the standout for his efforts with the bat.

The C’s enjoyed another week off with the bye, at least they’ll all be fresh for the game against South Gawler this week.

The D’s headed to Faith East to tackle Light Pass. With a hope of a shorter day, skipper Bob Smart won the toss and sent the visitors in. At first drinks it looked like that decision may have back fired with Light Pass 2 for 83 at the first drinks break. An inspired captaincy call then changed the game with Bob throwing the ball to Charles Shaw, who turned the game instantly, picking up 5 wickets in 5 overs. First 5 wicket haul for Charles – congratulations on the milestone. Bob also picked up a wicket, as did James McMahon (first wicket for the club), Troy Pudney and Stuart Swan.

A careful chase followed, with victory coming with a couple of overs to spare, although it was probably a bit closer at the end that it looked like it would be at the midway point of the innings. Best with the bat was young Jake Hartigan, making his first senior 50 for the club, top scoring 56 at the top of the order well supported by another youngster, Hugh Smart with 17. Bob Smart next best with 16, and Clint Hart saving the day at the end with 14 not out. BV Toyota players of the week is shared between Charles Shaw for his game changing spell of quality leg spin and for Jake Hartigan for his first of many milestone scores in senior cricket for the club.

The Under 16’s headed to South Gawler with skipper Nic Burton winning the toss and electing to bat on the fast South Gawler oval. The lads compiled a defendable 6 for 151 off of the allotted 40 overs, with James Madden top scoring with 46, Nic Burton making 39 and Clint Hean 31. Good line and length bowling should see the points come back to Tanunda next week, but don’t ball short or wide at South Gawler oval!

The Tanunda White Under 14 side headed to Eudunda to take on a combined Eudunda/Robertstown and Kapunda side. Tanunda won the toss and batted, compiling an excellent 5 for 139 off their 40 overs. Best with the bat were Dylan Birchard and Jackson Docherty, with 26 not out and 25 not out respectively. Riley Westbrook also enjoyed batting on the turf at Eudunda hitting 18 not out. Another defendable total with a solid bowling effort.

After observing a minute silence for Phil Hughes, the under 14 white boys made a great start with the ball. Blake claimed two early wickets. Hugh Smart and Oscar Harms came on first change and tightened the scoring up with Hugh finishing with 2/4 of his 4 overs and Oscar’s leggies proving unplayable on the dusty Tanunda pitch. In his first game, Ned Grieves took a screamer of a catch to remove one of the openers, and was later involved in a great bit of fielding that resulted in a run out. The tight bowling by Tanunda had Sandy Creek in trouble at 7 for little over 40, however a late partnership managed to get the score up to 95. Jacob Judd finished off the innings with his first ball, taking a great caught and bowled. A win should be on the way if the boys bat out the 40 overs next week.

After a sombre start to the day the Tanunda Under 12’s were sent in by the Gilbert Valley captain, our captain for the day was Sydney Pick. Some solid batting by all players saw Tanunda reach a total of 86 runs with Coan Linke and Hugo Schild compiling an impressive 33 run partnership, well batted boys. Our bowlers kept the ball full and online only bowling 17 wides for the day. Harmon Vears, Angus Blieschke, Jordan Rosenzweig, Hayden Spehr and Jack Underwood each took wickets. A bit of work on our fielding over the next few weeks is in order. Awards went to Coan Linke and Harmon Vears.

The Under 10’s took on Sandy Creek at Faith East on a warm Saturday morning, with skipper Xavier Dswonitzky spinning the coin the wrong way and out to field Tanunda went. Another excellent fielding effort with Harry Robinson doing a great job as keeper for the first time, with Ben Swan, Xavier Dswonitsky, Giles Button and Walter Holmes all picking up wickets. Tanunda batted well with Ben Mernagh and Hudson Lindner hitting their first fours. Darcy Thomson also hit a great four. Award Winners this week were Ben Mernagh, Giles Button, Walter Holmes and skipper Xavier Dswonitzky.

Santa comes to town this Friday, so time for all of us to pretend we’ve been good all year in the faint hope we’ll get the rewards… Get around him!

More rain…

The weather ensures a short but sweet chatter this week. A day of Thunder and Lightning around the valley gave most cricketers an unplanned mid-season break!

With constant lightening strikes, claps of thunder and buckets of rain coming down from above, our juniors all enjoyed the safety of their houses, which is probably a pretty sensible plan. At least your whites are ready for this week.

The A’s, and C’s were also both washed out (both opposed to them other Magpie folk from Mallala). The B’s and D’s managed to get away.

The B’s headed to Moculta to with a few overs left to bowl against Angaston. The home side set a chase total of 183 which turned out to be more than enough, with Tanunda bowled out for 125 in the 47th over. At 3 for 74 it was game on, however regular wickets fell from that point leaving the points with Angaston. Top scorers were Phil Graetz with 35 and Nathan Justin with 25 with a few of the others making double figures. Barossa Valley Brewing player of the week goes to Phil for top scoring in the chase.

The D’s took on Morgan at Faith amidst the thunderstorms at Faith West. There was an air of “footy club ” about the Tanunda side, which saw Bob Smart, Justin Thomson, Dan Eggleton, Loui Neldner and Chris Collins all take to the field together for the first time. Winning the toss and batting Tanunda were in a solid position after a 45 run partnership, with Jimmy Marshall and Bob Smart leading by example with 35 and 22 respectively. Regular wickets fell from that point with young Hugh Smart showing maturity beyond his years, again valuing his wicket with a solid 14. As the last wicket fell the visitors were set 115 for victory.

In reply Morgan showed why they are the force of the A5 side competition, easily chasing down the target in 19 overs. Chris Collins was best of the bowlers taking 2 scalps, with Tom Eggleton and Jmmy Marshall each picking up a wicket. There’s always next week. The Clubhouse MVP goes to Jimmy Marshall for his all round efforts. Special mention goes to James McMahon for his valiant chase of a ball to the boundary, gathering the ball inside the boundary line only to throw the ball over his head the wrong way for four, those at the ground enjoyed the chuckle.

Fingers crossed for fine weather for all sides this week, so far it looks to be no thunderstorms and a tad on the hot side!

Much needed rain, but…

Well they say you can’t trust the weatherman… well it sure did rain, just at the opposite part of the day that they warned us all about! The good news is there was enough play in all grades to ensure that whites still need a scrub and wash…

The A’s headed to the TCG for the clash of the Magpies, with the Tanunda variety hosting the Mallala variety. The Mallala boys won the toss and sent the home side in to see what the deck could do, and would have been delighted to see two of our bats back in the shed very early in the proceedings. Jon Justin and Brett Grocke stabalised the innings, with Brett falling for 29 after an excellent partnership. Another Jon strode the wicket, this time the ‘life member’ Farley variety, with the “Jons” seeing Tanunda safely through to 3 for 124 before the heavens open and the battle transferred to the bar! The game is set up for an enthralling battle next weekend. Barossa Valley Brewing player of the week goes to Jon Justin for his determined knock.

The B’s took the scenic journey to Moculta to tackle Angaston. The home side won the toss and had a hit, ending the day on 6 for 160, having faced 58 overs before the precipitation arrived. Moculta certainly isn’t the competitions largest oval, but probably has Good Shephard covered, so another interesting day ahead next Saturday as the lads look to chase the total down. Sam Dunn was best with the two wickets, well supported by a wicket each to Blake Lockett, Steve “I’m back again” Lewis, Uncle Toby Mifflin and Charles Shaw. Ulitmate Engineering player of the week is Sam Dunn for his 2 wickets.

Gilbert Valley filled up the tanks and headed to Faith East to tackle the C’s, who continue to field a very different side each week due to player unavailability. It was a father son affair with 4 Dads playing with their lads, with 3 others joining in the fun. Skipper Tim Brooks decided to employ pretty unusual tactics which may have worked until his counterpart caught on to Tim’s cunning plan and insisted that the game was played with stumps. After a short delay (due to stumps being inserted into the pitch rather than anything to do with the weather), Gilbert Valley had a hit and made a competitive, but gettable 8 for 160, with Darryl Hean again taking 4 wickets. Kyle Graetz showed he is a player of the future in the senior ranks at the club with 2 wickets. Josh West overcame the initial setback of the selectors forgetting he was playing and showed a good variety bucket of tricks to pick up a wicket, with Dan Reu taking the other wicket to fall.
In reply Tanunda had raced to 1 for 48 off 10 overs with Sam Brooks and Dan Reu hitting 20’s not out before the Smart Phone weather apps had seen the spectators bolt for home. Back to back centuries nipped in the bud for Dan, and Sam robbed of the chance for his maiden century. Maybe next week! Innovative Eyewear MVP goes to Darryl for his effort with the ball.

Unfortunately a combination of university exams, birthday parties, mighty river runs, retaining walls and sheds floors being laid resulting in the D’s having to give Greenock a week off. If the stars align one of these weeks soon we’ll actually have a 5th side sitting on the sidelines supporting the 4ths!

The under 16s played Tanunda North at Nuriootpa Saturday. After a steady start Tanunda lost a couple of wickets. The boys then had a great partnership of 105 between James Madden (who make 79) and Clinton Hean showing that he’s a chip off the old block with a career high of 40. The lads finished our 40 overs on 4/148, with good tight bowling this week and good fielding the boys should break through for their first win. Special mention to Bailey Smith for surviving his one and only ball!

The Under 14 white went into battle against Light Pass at the TCG on a cloudy Saturday morning. Riley Westbrook and Nicholas Mills were the only bats to really settle into the conditions, and both had excellent days scoring 27 and 37 respectively. The conditions restricted our innings to 33 overs, with the side reaching 8 for 109 by that stage. Another game set up for an interesting Saturday ahead!

The Under 14 Blacks kept their whites clean with the bye.

Tanunda played Mallala in the under 12’s on Faith Eastern Oval on Saturday morning. Sydney captained the team with Mallala winning the toss and chose to bat first. Tanunda bowled 7 overs before play was stopped due to rain with Jack Collins getting managing to get a wicket before the rain arrived to call an early end to proceedings.

The Under 10’s took on Kapunda at the “perfect for Under 10’s cricket” Kapunda Primary School. Skipper Max Lienert wanted to bowl, which was good, as he lost the toss and the opposition captain liked the idea of batting. After an early onslaught (which saw the first 6 of the season), the team showed that a willingness to slow it down a little and bowl good lines and length pay off. The wide count continues to reduce each week, well done all. Mitch Radzevicius was the pick of the bowlers with 3 excellent wickets, with Harry Robinson, James Duff, Hudson Lindner, Ben Mernagh all taking wickets.

Our batting was also impressive, with everyone continuing to value their wickets. Darcy Thomson set the challenge for his Dad, hitting 3 excellent boundaries. Sam Rostenberg and Ben Mernagh also hit fours. Award winners were Mitch for his excellent bowling, and Hudson Lindner for getting his first wicket for the club and for doing a great job at his first attempt at wicket keeping.

And now we’re all playing…

The A’s got their first win of the season with a comprehensive victory over Truro at Truro. Tanunda went into the day 253 runs in front and with 9 wickets to get. An excellent bowling performance saw us take another 16 wickets on the day, not quite enough for an outright win, but an excellent day out all the same! Truro could only manage 52 in their first innings, with Mitchell Boschen taking five wickets and Shaun Akkerman four. Truro reached 7 for 100 in their second innings, with Dylan Abinett making up for not getting close to bowling in the first innings, picking up four wickets, Mitchell Boschen taking another two wickets with Brett Grocke chipping in with the other wicket to fall. Barossa Valley Toyota MVP goes to Mitchell Boschen for his 7 wicket performance.

The B’s took to the TCG to chase down Gawler Central’s challenging total of 219. Unfortunately Tanunda were never in the hunt on a two paced Tanunda Pitch, with Blake Lockett and Sam Cox putting on the biggest partnership of the day to avoid the follow on with Blake ending on 43 not out. Jon Farley showed all how to value your wicket, making 21 in an equivalent number of overs. The visitors had another hit and ended the day on 3 for 45, with Blake Lockett, Sam Dunn and Toby Mifflin each taking a wicket. Tanunda Clubhouse MVP goes to Blake for his contributions with both the bat and the ball over the 2 weeks.

The C’s headed to Kapunda High School and came home with a tight 20 run win. Absolute star of the day was Danny Reu, proving you don’t need to be able to run to play great cricket, hitting a cracking 100 and also taking 3 wickets (getting to the game on time looks to have helped). Darryl Hean continued to dominate the A4 competition making 40, with Luke Shearer taking 4 wickets on debut for the Magpies. Rogash Windows MVP is an easy one, with Dan Reu taking the gong.

The D’s had a real father / son feel to it with 3 Dad’s having a game with their lad, which is what it’s all about really (overall we had 6 father and son pairs playing seniors on the weekend). Despite some confusion regarding the game not being a 20/20 game (with the run rate being very impressive, and the rate at which we got out depressing!) we managed to put together a tricky total of 128, and even managed to bat for 28 overs in the end. Rob Henschke was best with the bat with a crafty 26 not out, with another of the Dads, Dan Eggelton making 16. Kyle Graetz chimed in with 14, with a number of other bats getting into double figures. In reply it was game on until a couple of Truro’s key bats lost their wickets in quick succession, with Tanunda bowling out the visitors for 91 in the 28th over. Dan Eggleton and Kyle Graetz completed their fine all round days by taking 3 wickets each, with good support by all other bowlers. Great to not only see that D’s getting their second win of the years. Tundarri Sales and Service MVP goes to young Dan Eggleton who should hopefully be able to walk again by the time this goes to press.

The Under 16’s had a tough day at the office with a one day game at the TCG, with Lyndoch batting first and being 0/146 after their 25 overs. With the bat, after a bright start the loss of steady wickets saw the boys be dismissed for 111. Top scorers James Madden 30 and Nic Burton 27. Plenty of hard work will be needed in the nets this week to get us back on track. It is also great to see so many under 16s playing senior cricket, which is great for the future of the club.

The Under 14 Whites headed to Greenock and came home with a comprehensive 65 run win, bowling Greenock out for only 45. Jackson Doherty was the star of the day taking 4 wickets, with Zac Portlock, Angus Blieschke and Will Meyer each taking a wicket. Well done boys.

The Under 14 Blacks also had an excellent away victory, easily accounting for Lyndoch at Lyndoch, bowling the home side out for 53. Skipper Oscar Harms bowled an exceptional spell, ending with 2 for 5 off of five overs. Hugh Smart also took two very economical wickets, with Aaron Bert, Luca Whitelum, Will Parker and Harry Collins each taking a wicket.

The Under 12’s played Angaston at Faith on a warm “summer’s” morning. Jordan and Malakai opened the batting and had a good partnership of 11, with great boundaries coming from Jordan, Malakai, Hayden and Jack Collins. Hayden and Jack were the best of the bats with 10 and 11 runs respectively. Excellent bowling from Coan and Hugo resulted in catches by Samuel and Jack Collins. Good to see the Jack Underwood back out on the field. He continued to bowl leg spin with good effect. The boys fielding continues to improve, with plenty of enthusiasm and encouragement on the field was great to see. This week’s Amanti Pizza award went to Hugo Schild, with the McDonald’s Award going to Hayden Spehr.

The Under 10’s played a shortened game in the heat of Friday night against Light Pass at Faith. Great improvement continues to be shown every week in both our batting and fielding, with everyone valuing their wickets. Best with the bat was Sam Roestenberg who hit an excellent 4. The team’s bowling performance was outstanding, with all bowlers concentrating on line and length rather than long run ups and fast wides! Chloe Rosenzweig, Harry Robinson, Darcy Thomson and Ben Swan all took a wicket, with all players fielding with a real hunger for the ball. This week’s Amanti Pizza award went to Darcy Thomson for an excellent effort in the field and with the ball, with Sam Roestenberg’s effort with the bat seeing him awarded the McDonald’s Award.

Nearly everyone’s back on the park…

After a couple of weeks off the A’s headed to Truro and had a good day out. Truro won the toss and send Tanunda in hoping to use bowler friendly conditions to their advantage. A good batting performance saw Tanunda amass a very competitive 257, with Lauchy Scott-Hoy leading the way with 77, with excellent support from skipper Pete Mernagh with 65. Hugh Rogan overcame no one telling him he was playing A grade to make an excellent 38, with Brett Grocke also making 30. In reply Tanunda have an early scalp, with Mitchell Boschen taking the scalp of one of Truro’s key batsmen first ball of the only over we bowled for the day. Good line and length bowling should see the A’s bag their first points for the year. NGJ Accounting player of the week is Lauchy for his excellent innings.

After a huge effort by the curator to get a pitch up for cricket in recent weeks, the A2’s were the first to enjoy the turf at Tanunda for the year. We won the toss and sent Gawler Centrals in to see what the deck would do. A solid batting performance by the visitors racked up 219 by the end of the day, with the best with the ball for Tanunda being skipper Toby Mifflin with 3 economical wickets, Blake Lockett also picking up 3 scalps. They were supported by Kieren Smith and Aiden Radzevicius with a wicket a piece. Patient heads should see a very interesting afternoon of cricket at the TCG this weekend. Rogash Windows player of the week goes to Toby for his display of quality outswing bowling.

The C’s took on Lyndoch at Faith with most of last week’s team dancing the day away at Peter Lehmann’s, or having a look at a variety of spots along the Murray! Tanunda won the toss and had a bat compiling a very competitive 6 for 180 on a slow Faith Oval off our allotted 40 overs, with Liam Boschen kicking his year with a crafty 50 well supported with 40’s from Bob Smart and Craig “You do the best with what you’ve been given” Smith. A ripper of a game followed, with Lyndoch passing our score in the last over, close but no cigar as they say. Liam Boschen had a great all-round game with 2 wickets, Kyle Graetz and Nat Geue also chipping in with 2 wickets. Paul Healy woke up for long enough to take the remaining wicket to fall. Tanunda Foodland MVP goes to Liam Boschen for his fine return to cricket. After 2 close loses in a row the C’s will be looking forward to the winners list this week.

Unfortunately the number of players unavailable meant of forfeit for the D’s, and a damp pitch at Tanunda led to the Under 16’s now playing a 1 day game against the arch rivals from the North on Saturday.

The Under 14 Whites took on Greenock at Greenock and didn’t quite manage to bat out our allotted overs, ending the day on 110. Jayden Birchard was the star with bat with 35, supported by Dylan Birchard with 15, Nick Mills and Riley Westbrook both making double figures. Good luck defending the total this week boys.

The Under 14 Blacks took on Lyndoch at Lyndoch put on a great display of team batting making 5 for 175. Hugh Smart managing to outscore his Dad, top scoring with an excellent 44 not out, Jonah Whitelum showed that the batting genes have definitely flowed through the generations making 42 and Oscar Harms proving that great leg spin and wrong ‘un bowling isn’t the only thing he packs each Saturday morning making 37. A very defendable score with good bowling.

The Under 12’s played Greenock at Faith on a cold, windy morning. Jordan captained the team this week and chose to bat given the mild conditions. Some good boundaries were hit by Jack Collins, Coan, Malakia, Hugo and Hayden. The highlight of our batting innings was a great batting partnership from Coan and Malakai put on 18 runs. Best with the ball were Harmon and Sydney, with the team all bowling a good line and length, which help restrict the flow of runs. Liam and Samuel stepped up with wicket keeping duties this week and both kept well. McDonalds Award went to Jordan Rosenzweig with the Amanti Award going to Sydney Pick.

The Under 10’s were also on the road, taking on Freeling at Freeling Primary School. Skipper Mitchell Radzevicius won the toss and liked the idea of batting first. All batsmen showed great respect to the opposition bowlers and getting the rewards from valuing their wicket which is excellent to see. Tanunda’s young bowlers also showed that they are quick learners, concentrating on line and length. Best of the young bowlers being Darcy and Harry, with Nick “Sneaky” Holmes taking his second stumping in 2 weeks. Awards this week went to Harry and Nick for their continued improvement and passion for the game.

Stay cool, and with 9 teams on the park this week, see you at an oval in our beautiful Barossa!

And the 5’s are away too….

The A grade and B grade sides enjoyed their week off with the bye. The A4’s headed to Kapunda to take on Freeling, as you do! Runs on the board are the key, and unfortunately it wasn’t to be on Saturday with the side being bundled out for 143 with far too many overs remaining on the board. Mark Hoklas lead the way with the bat with a hard hitting 38, Kym Farley an enthusiastic 25 and Sam Cox 16 not out. After a flurry of excitement from one of the opposition bats the game settled into a tight tussle, with a partnership at the end seeing Freeling home with the points. Best with the ball were Darrlyn Hean with 4 wickets, supported by Hugh Rogan with 2 wickets and Sam Cox having an all round day with the other wicket to fall. Only cabbage moths at Kapunda High this week, meaning all fines will need to be paid. Next week the side has an away game against Lyndoch at Tanunda, as they say, cricket’s a funny game. Barossa Valley Brewing MVP – Darryl Hean.

It was great to see an A5 hit the park on Saturday with a mixture of youth and experience, and didn’t they hit the ground running! Batting first an impressive 6 for 288 was amassed, with Sam Dunn taking a week off from bowling to top score with 80 opening the batting, Toby Mifflin an excellent 68 low down in the order, Matt Radzevicius making a long awaited comeback to cricket with 35, Dylan Abinett 30 in a batsman role, Blake Lockett and Kyle Graetz both making 20’s (including Kyle getting off the mark with a 6). In reply Light Pass could only make 30, with Aiden Radzevicius showing that Dad wasn’t the only one who knew a thing a thing or two about cricket taking 4 for 3, Blake Lockett 3 for 4, Kyle Graetz, Jackson Gray and Nat Geue each taking a wicket. With the word spreading around town it looks like we’ll be seeing a number of comebacks to cricket in the one day sides, which is terrific to see. We look forward to many challenges between up and coming lads and their fathers throughout the year! Rogash Windows MVP – Sam Dunn.

The Under 16’s were unable to chase down Gilbert Valley’s 146. After a solid start saw the side 1 for 50 at drinks, a couple of run outs hurt the run chase badly with Tanunda ending the day on 9 for 109. James Madden was best with the bat making 22 at the top of the order, Clint Hean was next best with 17, with Jake Hartigan a contributing a solid 16.
The Under 14’s had a positive start to the season easily surpassing Nuriootpa’s score of 95, ending the day on 155. A solid foundation was laid by the top order in the first 20 overs. This allowed a rotation of all players for a bat. Standout performances by Jonah Whitelum (making a fine 50), Aaron Bert and Lachlan Munzberg who all put a value on their wickets.

The Under 14 white side didn’t have the same success of the black side in round 1, unable to defend their score of 94 with a combined Greenock / Freeling side ending the day on 112. Best with the ball were Jackson Docherty, William Meyer, Tyson Healy, Angus Blieschke and Angus Schild who each took a wicket, with Zac Portlock having a great day in the field with 2 catches.

The Under 12’s played Greenock at Nuriootpa High School. Jordan Rosenzweig, Hayden Spehr and Hugo Schild best with the ball taking wickets, Coan Linke doing a great job with the gloves taking a ripper of a catch. Harry Lienert had an excellent first game, batting and fielding well. The majority of the team valued their wickets and batted well, with this continuing to be a focus at training in coming weeks.

The Under 10’s had their first home game for the year, taking on Gawler Centrals at Faith West. The spirit and enthusiasm for the game is terrific in this group of young future stars. Bowling first the side achieved their first 50 for the year, unfortunately it was in the wides column – but you have to start somewhere! Sam Roestenberg showed he’s a true chip off the block with 2 wickets, with James Duff and Jason Tapscott both taking a wicket – well done all! Nick Holmes took his first stumping, and Ben Swan taking an excellent catch in the gully. Great to see each of the young bowlers having a real go at this tricky art. Batting was good, with a focus respecting the bowler, playing cricket shots and good running well between wickets.

Good luck to all 9 sides heading out to represent Tanunda next Saturday.

The 4’s are away

The A1 and A2 sides both having byes and the numbers for the A5s side not quite there, the A4s headed to Moculta to take on Angaston and had an easy victory to start the year. A great effort in the field saw Angaston restricted to 65, with Sam Dunn the best with the ball with 3 wickets. Paul Healy took 2 wickets and caught a butterfly, Kym Underwood recalled times gone by with an excellent spell of express bowling returning 2 wickets for 7 off 5 overs, Darryl Hean took a wicket to kick off his year. Nic Burton took the remaining scalp and decided that catching butterflies was too hard, so caught the cricket ball a couple of times instead. Great to see the young fella’s contributing in the field, with Darryl Hean’s run out something that will only get better as the year goes on!

A relatively easy chase followed with Tanunda passing the score 4 wickets down. Tim Brooks decided he needed to run himself out on 13 so he could spend the rest of the afternoon trying to work out how to get his spare tyre out of his fancy vehicle, run machines Danny Rey and current A4 cricketer of the year Darryl ‘All-round’ Hean making about 20, with Sam Dunn getting the team across the line with his gallant 0 not out. Well done all.

The Under 16’s travelled to Saddleworth on Saturday to play Gilbert Valley. The boys got off to a flying start with the ball, having the home side 5 for 45 at drinks. Unfortunately the second session wasn’t quite as good, with the fielding dropping off. Gilbert Valley ended scoring a competitive total of 7 for 146. Pick of the bowlers was Lachie Miller with 3 for 25 of 8 and good contributions from Brodie Robinson 1 for 27, Ben Biagi for 18 and Bailey Smith 2 for 23. A solid effort with the bat is required this week, we are confident the boys can get the job done. Special mention to Brett Grocke, Shaun Akkerman, Dylan Abinett and Blake Lockett with their help so far at training, it is much appreciated by the next crop of senior cricketers!

The U14’s 2 day game against traditional rivals Nuriootpa is evenly poised. After losing the toss and taking the field a team bowling effort eventuated – 7 Bowers taking wickets. Capped off by some great fielding – 2 run outs, which limited the opposition to 95 runs. With a young batting team calm heads are required next week to ensure bat the full 40 overs on offer. The opportunity is there for taking, good luck this week!

The 12’s played Light Pass at Stockwell on a beautiful summer’s day on Saturday. Samuel Tapscott had the captain duties this week and was sent in to bat by the Light Pass captain. Jordan Rosenzweig and Malakia Gaskin-vanWieringen opened the batting with a solid start, putting on 16 runs. Solid efforts by all other batsmen helped guide us on our way to a fabulous end result of 3 wickets for 81 runs. All bowlers bowled well with Jordan Rosenzweig taking 3 wickets, supported by Samuel Tapscott, Angus Dohse, Jack Collins and Hugo Schild who all took a wicket. Well done to the whole team for an all round great game of cricket. The boys encouraged one another and assisted each other during the batting warm ups. A huge thank you to all parents for their support and encouragement of all players.

The Under 10’s headed to Nuri on Friday night to take on the traditional rival, with many of our future cricket stars having their first game of cricket. The main focus for the team is to learn the basics of the game while having fun, and the group is showing they have what it takes to do both. Tanunda batted first and batted well, with good running between wickets and all players having a go, highlights were Mitch Radzevicius, Sam Roestenburg and Ben Swan hitting 4s. The team bowled well with Skipper Chloe Rosenzweig, Ben Mernagh and Walter Holmes best with the ball, Nick Holmes and Ben Swan both taking good catches. The absolute highlight of the fielding effort was an excellent direct hit runout by Mitch Radzevicius. An excellent start to the year for our youngest side.

Milo Cricket has commenced at Tanunda Oval, 4pm on Thursday’s. It’s great to see the youngsters out there learning the basics.

For anyone thinking about donning the whites, we are a couple short of being able to comfortably fill the A5 side each week – so we’d love to hear from anyone who’s either played before and is keen to turn back the clock or for anyone who hasn’t had a game before but wants to give it a go. Training is at the nets at Tanunda Oval from about 5:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Another year is upon us…

You finally get rid of the sore spots left over from one cricket season, the winter sports season flashes by and away we go again! Cricket Season 2014 / 2015 is upon us, and we head into it full of promise after a very strong year last year, with the only thing missing being some silverware, that’s certainly the aim for the season ahead.

Numbers continue to grow at the club which is outstanding, meaning the TCC will continue to field sides in A1 Reserves, A2’s, A4’s and we’re having a crack at an A5 side too. Junior cricket also continues to blossom, with the TCC fielding an under 10 side this year.

A gentle start to the year with just the A’s and B’s in action on the weekend. The A’s took on Lyndoch in a rematch of last season’s Grand Final. The ‘Dockers batted first and made 187, with Dylan Abinett and Luke Samain leading the way with the ball taking 3 wickets each, with Shaun Akkerman and Mitch Boschen taking 2 wickets apiece.

A solid batting performance by the middle order had us right in the game, with the equation at about 20 runs to get with 3 wickets in hand. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be with Tanunda being bowled out on 171. Alex Petty made a very promising start to his career with the TCC with 50, Nathan Justin a solid 32, Brett Grocke and skipper Pete Mernagh making 20’s. Tanunda Clubhouse MVP – Alex Petty.

The B’s took on Nuri at Nuri #2 and came home with the points. Batting first Tanunda made 8 for 147, with skipper Toby Mifflin continuing his form from last season with 47 and Andy Edwards (playing his first B grade game for the club) making a fine 55. Kym Farley was the only other bat to make double figures.

A team bowling performance restricted the home side to 131 in reply, with Charles Shaw taking 2 wickets in his first game for the club (welcome aboard). Jon Farley, Sam Cox and Aiden Radzevicius also picked up 2 wickets each, with Sam Dunn and Nic Burton chipping in with a wicket each. A good start to the year boys. Tundarri Sales & Service MVP – Andy Edwards.

After kicking off the season, both the A’s and B’s have a bye this weekend, whilst all the other sides get their seasons underway. Good luck to all players for the season ahead, for those new to the club this year, welcome aboard! For those starting their cricket careers, all the best – it’s a great game, enjoy not only the game, but also the friendships. Winning is good, but playing the game in the right spirit is just as important.

If you are not able to get the cricket this weekend, pop down to Tanunda Oval on Saturday to check out the Monaro Nationals, with 250 cars on display, it should be quite an event!

Training kicks off!

Senior training kicks off this Sunday 21st September from 10:30am.

The senior club is looking to field an extra side this year in the A5 competition, so if you know any past players looking to resurrect their career, or someone who wouldn’t mind playing the odd game or ten, then get them to come out to training!

And that’s the game…

A small chatter this week as we transitioning from attempting to playing cricket to watching those in the younger quadrant playing football in the mud and wet!

Well done to our association trophy winners:

  • Mitch Boschen (A1 Reserves Bowling)
  • Dan Reu (A4 Batting)
  • Darryl Hean (A4 MVP)
  • Will Loffler (Under 16 Bowling Aggregate)
  • Jake Hartigan (Under 14 Fielding)

Special mentions to those who managed to achieve a top 5 finish:

  •      Dylan Birchard – Under 14 Bowling Aggregate & Average
  • Will Loffler – Under 16 Batting Aggregate & Average and runner up in the Under 16 Bowling Aggregate
  • Darryl Hean – A4 Batting Aggregate and Average and also in the A4 Bowling Aggregate and Average
  • Chris Collins – A4 Bowling Aggregate and Average
  • Toby Mifflin – A2 Batting Aggregate and Average
  • Luke Samain – A1 Reserves Bowling Aggregate and Average

The season closed out with a combined Junior and Senior presentation day on Sunday.  We won’t go into all the detail of the end of year presentation day, congratulations to all of the trophy winners.   Whilst individual trophies aren’t what we head into a cricket season for, with that elusive team prize the one we are all aiming for, congratulations to those that have topped the leader boards.

Congratulations to Mitch Boschen – the man with a chair full of trophies – a stellar year which yielded 43 wickets in A1 Reserves – terrific effort Mitch.  A very worthy winning of the club’s MVP for 2013/2014.

The highlight of the presentation day was when one of the gentlemen of the game achieves more than any player to come before him, with that man being Jon Farley.  It was great to see Jon’s family and a couple of our life members in  Kevin Bartsch and Ray Giersch  on hand to see Jon being acknowledged for becoming the games record holder for the Tanunda Cricket Club, with 311 games (not out).

Not only did the club celebrate 300 games for Jon in style, but President Darren had great delight in surprising Jon with the honour of becoming a life member of the Tanunda Cricket Club.  Well done Jon.

That wraps up the year.  A successful year for the club, a huge leap forward without the flags we were hoping for – but watch out for next year!  For those that think a casual game of cricket is behind you, watch out on the hill at the footy this year – we’re coming to get you!

Good luck to the Tanunda Football, Netball and Hockey clubs as they fly the flag in the wetter and colder months.  Let’s make sure Tanunda boys and girls are happy.

The Tanunda Cricket Club is back where we want to be – in finals action.  Not quite the couple of premierships – but we’ll come back bigger and stronger next year.

Finally, and importantly, thanks to all of our sponsors for your wonderful support throughout the season.   Your support makes it possible for us to play the game we love each week.  Thank you.

See you in 2014/2015!

Senior wrap up

Congratulations to all the senior sides for making the finals this season. It’s a big turn around from last season where all three sides finished bottom of the ladder!

Congratulations also to the 1’s and the 4’s for getting over the line in the semi-final to make it through to the grand final. Hard luck for the 2’s again, missing out on playing in that final game of the season!

Don’t forget to support the grand finalists by getting out to training this week and to also support them in the GF.

1’s are playing at Stockwell, 4’s are at Eudunda.
