Junior Season 2016/2017 Kickoff!

A good weekend of cricket overall for Tanunda, with some positive results coming in.

The 1’s travelled back across to Greenock to defend their total of 173, where Greenock resumed at 1 for 4. There was some early controversy with the team sheets with Christian Gattermayr only being listed in one of the score books, reducing to a sub-fielder. This fired up his partner in crime Mitchell Boschen, who took 5 wickets in a Tundarri Sales & Service man of the match performance as Greenock were all out for 62. Other wicket takers were Trent Goers with 3, and Luke Samain and Dylan Abinett with 1 each.
Skipper Nathan sent them back in to have a crack at outright, but as the pitch flattened out and Dilshan Abinett got hit for a few home runs, this turned out to be a lost cause with Greenock finishing on 2/75. Nonetheless, a solid first round effort from Tanunda to bring home the points.

The 2’s were back at Tanunda oval to chase Truro’s total of 236 on a pitch that played surprisingly well considering the rain during the week (well done to everyone who helped get it up). Schwayne Akkerman and Bailey Smith were early wickets to fall leaving Tanunda in trouble at 2/4, but it was again the youth of Tanunda that came to the rescue. Kyle Graetz anchored the innings making 41 in a nice partnership with Jackson Gray (25). Brodie Robinson (35) provided a late cameo with Adam Norman (21), but Tanunda just didn’t have the run rate to get the win finishing 8/175. A promising result though for a young side to post a competitive total against a side that played finals last season. Lynas Valley Ford man of the match goes to Jackson Gray for his 4 wickets and 25 runs.

The 4’s had the road trip to Mallala where they were sent in to bat. Matt Fechner got us off to a good start with 20 at the top of the order, backed up by Saxon Dswonitzky (28) and Phil Graetz (31). A shout out to Dan and Brad Marshall who somehow put on a partnership of 35 by scoring 20 off the bat between them; those mad skills brought the total to 8/155 from the 40 overs. Early wickets to Jamie Roehr had Mallala at 2/2, from where they never fully recovered being bowled out for 84. Sam Cox and Mark Hoklas also took two wickets. A special mention Wayne ‘Bish’ Bishop who took the last wicket of the day on his first ball, giving him figures of 1/0 from 1 ball! Yourtech Services goes to the bloke who was nothing more than a backpacking tourist on Thursday, Elliot Rich for an excellent effort behind the stumps, welcome aboard.

The U16’s travelled to Gawler Central where they won the toss and elected to bat. Jonah Whitelum (58no) and Riley Westbrook (18) made a good start with a 34 run opening stand. Luca Whitelum retired on 15 to bring Tomas Heuzenroeder to the crease who finished not out on 7 to bring the total to 2/109. Gawler batted well with 2 players reaching 50 to make light work of the chase, finishing 2/152. Jordan Rosenzweig and Angus Blieschke picked up a wicket each, and Luca Whitelum was economical only going for 6 runs from his 3 overs.

With the winter weather the Under 14 game was rescheduled into a 20/20 game at a damp Williamstown oval. Losing the toss we were sent in to bat first looking for a solid batting performance against an extremely experienced and older opponent, but we struggled to get anything away and with some poor shot selections we lost wickets consistently. Liam Cook (6no) showing how it should be done top scoring, with Syd Pick the only other batsman to trouble the scorers. At the end of the innings the Tanunda had only managed a very disappointing 9/16. Tanunda’s bowling and fielding effort was much more to the standard we have set, with some great line and length bowling from Syd Pick (3/11), Braydan Schaefer (2/9) and James Roehr (2/8). Mitch Manning took a screamer of a catch diving forward from the slips, while Sam Tapscott took 2 catches Liam Cook, James Roehr and Hayden Spehr all held onto one. Sandy Creek finished on 9/85. The message from the coach to the players is that they need to value our wickets more when batting and have the patience to keep the good balls out and put away the poor deliveries. This week’s game is against Nuriootpa so the lads will need to bounce back with a strong performance this week. All will be working hard on our batting techniques at training this week!!

The Under 12’s was an “All Tanunda” affair with Tanunda White taking on Tanunda Black at Faith West. Tanunda Black won the toss and had a bat, allowing the White’s to enjoy the “cake of soap experience”. The bowling and fielding effort for the first game of the year was excellent throughout the morning. Mitchell Radzevicius was top scorer for the Black’s, with a real team effort full of singles. Best with the ball for the White’s were Harry Bobinson, Kobi Schulz, Nick Travers and Jack Underwood with 2 wickets each, whilst Sam Roestenburg, Darcy Thompson, Oscar Dahlitz and Drake Desilva each got their seasons underway with a wicket.

Just as the oval started to dry out the win and rain arrived making it a particularly “wintery” start to the season. Roles were reversed and it was Tanunda White’s turn to bat with Darcy Thompson top scoring with the bat with Walter Kinlock and Sam Roestenburg finding the boundary. Lots of singles with great running between wickets a highlight of the innings. Best of the bowling for the Black’s were Chloe Rozensweig, Remi van der Vanne, and Walter Holmes with a wicket a piece.

The Under 10 White had a great first up effort against Willaston at Faith East on Saturday morning, getting a win by 1 run . It was a solid batting performance and great to see the enthusiasm in the field. Well done Daniel Robinson, Jack Homburg, Will Hansen, Charlie Homburg and Ashton Sherwood for playing their first game for Tanunda. Well done boys for a great team effort.

So, a solid start to the season with 2/3 senior teams bringing home the points, and some promising signs for the 2’s and juniors.
